Greek mythology tells of a handsome young hunter named Narcissus. One day while bending down to a river for a drink of water, he noticed his reflection. Upon discovering his own beauty, he became obsessed. A few versions of the story exist, but the essence is that, captivated by his own reflection and unable to focus his attention anywhere else, he withers away and dies.
The core elements of pride are good. They are the pieces that push us to work hard at something, to try again after we’ve failed, or to stand our ground. But sometimes, pride can turn into something more. It becomes arrogance. It becomes ignorance. It becomes obsession, all else be damned. These feelings describe what the cautionary tale of Narcissus is.
This is the concept I was trying to represent with this scent; pride as a wholesome foundation, but a manic suggestion of superiority.
The wholesome representation of this soap is a barbershop smell; sophisticated, confident, and classic. Oakmoss serves as the dominant base note with which violet and geranium modify to create a delicate clean. Rosemary “dries out” the loudness of the flowers a little bit and replaces that with some dry freshness. A combination of lemon and neroli bring some sharp citrus into the mix, an essential part of the classic barbershop experience.
But what’s special about Pride is not its classic influence, but the modification of it.
Cedar wood has been added to give a little base note depth to the very smooth oakmoss. Tonka bean is used sparingly to lift the whole fragrance up and contribute some careful sweetness. Adding some dynamic vibrancy to the middle of the fragrance is cardamom and nutmeg, which is where this barbershop begins to separate itself from any other. Finally, bergamot and blood orange calm the intense lemon-based citruses. The result is an elegant, restrained opening, not a sterile one.
These notes are not often seen in traditional barbershop smells. Collectively, they are the representation of the darker side of pride: arrogance (spices), ignorance (sweetness), and obsession (deep citrus).
The soaps in The Seven Collection are premium products. And they look and feel like it. I spent about 2 months researching ingredients and 3 months experimenting before I was able to produce the soap that I’m offering here.
The lather is incredibly protective, dense, and has that sought-after texture of melted marshmallows. This contributes to a slickness that rivals some of the best soaps that I’ve tried. Ingredients like lanolin, shea butter, and botanical extracts provide a superb post-shave skin feel. It has exceptional hard water tolerance and lather stability. It’s everything that all of the soaps out there claim to be, but delivers in a tangible way.
The seven deadly sins are the cardinal vices referenced in Christian teachings and scripture. They are the doorways to sinful behavior and the temptation that surrounds us all. They represent pleasure and satisfaction at the expense of our morality. They are the deeds that corrupt our conscience. The drunkards, the lawless, and the heretics find comfort here. They are: Gluttony, Lust, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, and Pride.
The Seven Collection is a sinister celebration of these sins. It is a white flag of surrender raised to temptation’s army. It is a shameless retreat from righteousness. Each product in the Seven Collection is inspired by a sin, and you are invited to experience each. Come and partake in the forbidden fruit, for it is this kind that tastes best.
