From Phoenix and Beau

What does it smell of?  Pall Mall is a carefully blended barbershop inspired profile that is a three way accord of citrus, floral herbaceous and (light) woody musk. With top notes of lemon, bergamot and petitgrain, a middle of floral and herbaceous neroli and lavender and a (light) base of oakmoss Pall Mall is a bright and light profile that rewards you throughout your shave.

Attention to detail: Our enterprise is an intimate family operation where we focus on the detail, quality and aesthetic of our products and we focus on you, our customer. An example is how we use our own hands to blend each essential oil accord. These are carefully meted out recipes that are made one batch at a time and added to the just made soap. Here’s a short video on how to build our lather.

Ingredients: Potassium stearate, aqua, potassium tallowate (bovine), potassium castorate, cocos lactate, glycerin, potassium safflowerate, potassium shea butterate, lanolin, allantoin, tussah silk and essential oils: lemon, neroli, petitgrain, bergamot, lavender and oakmoss.

Method: Each soap is hand made via the hot process technique and decanted in to wide neck 100mm diameter plastic jars. We fill each jar with approximately 4oz (115g) of soap and then let them cure for 8-weeks. After this we hand clean the exterior jar (elbow grease only) before each jar has its sticker applied to its lid.

Wonderful soap base that leaves skin feeling very soft and moisturized even without aftershave balm. 5 Star soap base, 3 Star scent.

Lather: Excellent, creamy lather from hard soap puck. I followed artistan’s instructions and bloomed soap with a thin layer of hot water and let sit for about 15 minutes, loaded my brush from the tub, and lathered in a ceramic bowl. No irritation from soap, and few to zero weepers/cuts on 3 shaves so far.

Scent: Not my favourite scent. Opening the jar, the soap had an unpleasant smell that dissipated after letting it air. Soap smells much better once it’s lathered up. I got a floral and citrus smell from the soap when i applied to my face. My girlfriend says the scent is “just okay”.

On sale, this soap is very good value.

Phoenix and Beau is a great line of soaps for me, think I have 3 or 4 of them and the base on these is just amazing. When loading up I got a great paste on my face and adding water whips it into a great lather. Scent is citrusy and has a strong floral/herbaceous tinge to it and a small amount of woody warmth. Scent strength is a little on the lighter side, so pretty subtle, but protection, glide and post shave feel are high – face feels great afterwards. If you are looking for a powerhouse scent, this may not be your cup of tea. Now looking at Baskerville and Whitechapel.

This is the only Phoenix & Beau I have so far, but I am planning to had others because I really liked this one. Although the scent profile is not the same, there is something in the scent that remind me of the Cologne Russe from Barrister & Mann. I usually don’t bloom my soap ( I usually scoop ), but I decided to try it as the artisan highly suggested it and I think that it make a quite good lather with enough slickness and residual slickness to give you a damn good shave!

The scent profile is on the medium to low strength to my nose, which won’t interfere with any of your cologne or AS.
